DMT Diamond Whetstone With Hardwood Box

DMT Diamond Whetstones are a dependable maintenance free sharpening system with a classic look. Each stone comes in a wooden box, and is color-coded by grit size. The interrupted diamond surface quickly sharpens wide tools, because the dot wells capture the dust created by sharpening, leaving the abrasive clear of debris.

Diamond abrasive works dry or with a splash of water. Clean up is generally non-existent, but in the event you do want to clean the stone, just erase the surface with a polymer eraser, or rinse it off in the sink.

DMT bench stones use a generous and even distribution of monocrystaline micronized diamond abrasive bonded to a nickel plated steel surface. DMT’s proprietary diamond coating method creates a stone that is both durable and precise. The resin body of the Diamond whetstone is engineered for flatness, and has two tabs at the ends with holes for permanently mounting the stone.

The interrupted surface of the stone works very well on wide tools, but can catch gouges, and tools with a narrow point of contact with the stone. We recommend DMT’s polka-dot sharpening products for tools 1/4″ or wider. Depending on your technique and the specific tool being sharpened you may be able to go smaller than that without trouble.

Always store stones dry, a simple wipe with a towel is enough. At first the diamond surface will feel very aggressive. After the first few sharpenings the stone will develop a smoother feel without losing performance.

Extra Coarse – Diamond Size: 60 micron, 220 mesh DMT Color Code: Black
Use for edge repair, resetting or changing a bevel, or flattening fine grit water stones. Good first step for flattening the backs of chisels and plane irons. Color code: Black 60 micron, 220 mesh.

Coarse– Diamond Size: 45 micron, 325 mesh DMT Color Code: Blue
Use for restoring very dull edges, coarse cutting tools, such as froes, lawnmower blades, axes or mortise chisels. Can be used for flattening chisels and plane irons.

Fine– Diamond Size: 25 micron, 600 mesh DMT Color Code: Red
Good intermediate step for plane irons, chisels, or carving tools. Perfect for general sharpening – this is the grit we keep in the kitchen to sharpen knives that see abuse. For woodworking we recommend following this grit with a finer grit diamond stone, water stone, or diamond paste.

Extra Fine– Diamond Size: 9 micron, 1200 mesh DMT Color Code: Gray

Good for use as an intermediate step for plane irons, chisels, or carving tools. Excellent single stone for sharpening kitchen knives. For woodworking we recommend following this grit with a water stone, diamond paste, or extra extra fine grit stone.
